Connect with Huskers Across the Nation
Show your Nebraska pride at Husker events across the country! In the coming weeks, gatherings are planned in New Hampshire, Indiana, San Diego and more. On Aug. 8, the Nebraska Alumni Association will host “Celebrate Nebraska” in Denver, featuring UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman, Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst, men’s basketball coach Tim Miles and other UNL leaders. The event is open to all Husker fans, and the RSVP deadline is July 31. On Aug. 10, the Kansas City Royals will host Huskers Night at the K. All Nebraska alumni and fans can purchase discounted tickets to the Royals’ game against the Boston Red Sox. Support MLB All-Star  and Husker alum Alex Gordon! In addition, Husker baseball coach Darin Erstad is scheduled to make an appearance. To receive the discount, tickets MUST be purchased online in advance. Congrats, Cather Circle New Members!
Cather CircleThe NAA is excited to welcome 31 alumni to Cather Circle, our networking and professional development group for women. The new members represent 11 states and Washington D.C., and a variety of backgrounds and professions, including advertising, agriculture, business, teaching, entertainment, entrepreneurs and more. Members are selected for their accomplishments in their careers and civic activities and for their interest in mentoring current students. New member list »
Michigan, Minnesota and South Carolina
Support the Husker football and men’s basketball teams on the road! We’ve got three exciting trips that are open to all alumni and fans:If you’ve thought about traveling to Ann Arbor with the NAA, now is the time. After the 2013 season, the Nebraska football team will not make another trip to Michigan until at least 2018! Our trip is open to all Husker fans and features round-trip, charter air transportation departing from Lincoln. More info »A limited number of spots are available on our bus trip to Minnesota (Oct. 24-27). Yell Squad Alumni Group Forms
Yell SquadThe Yell Squad Alumni have become the NAA’s latest official affiliate group!  Their leader, Jeff Castle, is a 1983 graduate and a life member of the Nebraska Alumni Association. The group will serve all Yell Squad alumni, and will kick things off November 1-2 with a reunion celebrating their 110th anniversary. Read more »
Scarlet Guard Grows
Cather CircleThe NAA’s student group, Scarlet Guard, served ice cream to about 3,400 students and parents who attended this year’s Scarlet Scoop in conjunction with New Student Enrollment. During the 24-day event, SG welcomed 560 new members to Scarlet Guard and went through 135 gallons of UNL Dairy Store ice cream. Scarlet Guard is the largest, fastest-growing student organization on campus, and membership is open to all students. Grant Supports Math Education
Helping students improve their math skills by investing in outstanding math teachers is the logic behind a $5.5 million grant made by two Omaha foundations. The Sherwood Foundation and the Lozier Foundation have partnered to provide the grant to the University of Nebraska Foundation to support a three-year partnership between Omaha Public Schools and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Center for Science, Mathematics and Computer Education. The project plans to reach more than 250 teachers over three years. The first group of teachers began graduate coursework this month. Read more »
Preserving Nebraska Veterans’ Stories
VeteranUNL’s Brian O’Grady, an interlibrary loan borrowing specialist with the University Libraries, is recording conversations with veterans to document war experiences. O’Grady has recorded the war stories of 20 Nebraska veterans, focusing on World War II vets, documenting the stories before members of the Greatest Generation are gone. He also has talked to veterans from the Korean and Vietnam conflicts and plans to include more recent conflicts in the Middle East. He provides copies of the interviews to families. O’Grady also plans to publish the stories and possibly donate the recordings to a historical archive. “The main reason I do this … is to capture a story that otherwise would have been lost,” he said. “This project is all about preserving an oral history for future generations.” Read more »
Clinical Psychology Program Recognized
UNL’s Clinical Psychology Training Program has been named as a top program in the United States. David Hansen, professor of psychology and director of the program, was notified that the UNL program has been named as the 2013 Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies Outstanding Training Program. This recognition is given to only one program every two years. Representatives of UNL’s program will be on hand at the annual conference in Nashville, Tenn., in November to formally accept the award.Read more »

Field Bears Osborne’s Name Again
In the 90th anniversary season of Memorial Stadium, a legendary name that graced the field for all of one season will return in perpetuity. Nebraska is finishing the installment of new FieldTurf, with “Tom Osborne Field” stitched in red on the white edges of the east and west sidelines. The name has been absent on the storied field for 14 seasons, even though it has remained the field’s official name since the University of Nebraska Board of Regents’ approval in 1998. Transformed Devaney Takes Shape
Lost in the shuffle of the newly expanded East Memorial Stadium for football and the newly built Pinnacle Bank Arena for basketball is the remodeled Devaney Center. The transformed Devaney Center will be a world-class venue for men’s and women’s gymnastics, wrestling and volleyball, writes Husker N-Sider Randy York. The remodeled Devaney Center is about 80 percent complete and is “on track” for its full public unveiling Aug. 24 in the Husker volleyball team’s annual preseason scrimmage. Charleston Classic Field Announced
The Huskers will take on UMass in the opening game of the Charleston Classic on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 11:30 a.m. (CT) on ESPN3. The eight-team, 12-game tournament runs Nov. 21-24 in South Carolina. Other participating teams include Clemson, Davidson, Georgia, Temple, UAB and New Mexico. Nebraska, under second-year Coach Tim Miles, returns 10 letterwinners and three starters from a team that went 15-18 in his first season, including guard Ray Gallegos and forwards David Rivers and Shavon Shields. The alumni association’s trip to the Charleston Classic is open to all Husker alumni and fans, and includes all-session game tickets. Read more »
